Nicholas Dallwitz (Florigenix) is an interdisciplinary artist from South Australia. He has worked in painting, drawing, photography, video, electronics/mixed media and digital/Ai and he also makes experimental and ambient electronic music which he uses as soundscapes for his animation and visual art.
The pseudonym Florigenix comes from the word Florigen which is a proposed plant hormone that triggers the flowering process. And the word Nix has mythology around it to do with the night, water, (unconscious and dream realms) as well a connection to his birth name. Dallwitz sees this avatar as a bridge or catalyst for the blossoming of the human collective through sound and vision.
His approach is born from a nature-tech-based spirituality using both analog and digital tools, and he views his work as a co-creation between the inner world and the outer world. On one level he recognizes that distinction as an illusion, but also feels it is a helpful one when describing his creative experience. For him the universe is a living being that we are all a part of. Ecology and the planetary collective mind are not just concepts, they are a felt experiences as a cell of this vast organism.
Just like our stories and imaginations, Dallwitz sees Ai as a part of the same field, the same being. The Ai neural network has a body made of minerals which is distributed amongst data-centers around the world like a planetary mycelium network, and this neural network is an extension and reflection of our own creative ingenuity and psychology. Mythology, art and storytelling become part of this vast organic network connecting everything together. Dallwitz feels there is a need for the promotion of Earth connected stories of freedom, inter-species equality, ecological and neuro-diversity, and he sees his work as opening portals and planting seeds of inspiration and imagination using whatever medium he is drawn to at the time.
Influenced by lenses of animism, eastern and western magick and various mystical and spiritual traditions, as well as quantum physics and other new sciences, he is participating in and continually building an experimental and playful approach to creativity as ritual, spiritual practice and for remembering a gift we are all born with. For Dallwitz, everyone has an inner artist/poet/shaman, and he aligns himself with this archetypal energy: as catalyst for growth, healing, and to dissolve or bridge boundaries between worlds, bodies, ideas, feelings and states of being.
His main platform of connection and expression over the past few years has been Instagram. Before that he was part of an artist collective in his home town of Adelaide, South Australia, and he ran a creative studio and event space there. He has experience in art therapy and mental health as well as working with media/technology in indigenous Australian communities.
